Radically Open Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (RO DBT) is a specialised therapeutic approach designed to help individuals with overcontrol tendencies develop greater emotional openness, flexibility, and social connectedness for improved well-being and mental health. RO DBT is a structured treatment protocol, as detailed in Lynch's manuals (2018a; 2018b), and its efficacy, acceptability, and feasibility are firmly grounded in extensive clinical translational research spanning over 25 years. This substantial body of evidence underscores the therapeutic value of RO DBT for individuals grappling with these challenging and chronic conditions.
RO DBT has been specifically developed to assist individuals who struggle with persistent issues such as treatment-resistant depression, anorexia nervosa, autism spectrum disorders, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.
Studies have consistently demonstrated the effectiveness of RO DBT in helping individuals with these conditions achieve improved emotional regulation, enhanced interpersonal functioning, and greater overall well-being.
Individuals who exhibit overcontrol tendencies typically have a strong inclination to control their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors to a degree that it becomes maladaptive or detrimental to their overall well-being and functioning.
Promoting the development of meaningful and fulfilling social connections. RO DBT emphasises the importance of social bonds and teaches individuals with overcontrol tendencies how to engage in more open and authentic interpersonal interactions.
Helping individuals develop greater flexibility in their thinking and behavior. This target involves challenging rigid patterns of thought and encouraging individuals to be more open to new experiences, ideas, and ways of doing things.
A treatment priority in RO DBT is identifying and reducing maladaptive coping strategies associated with overcontrol, such as avoidance, perfectionism, and rigid problem-solving. RO DBT helps clients replace these strategies with more adaptive ones.
